Review of the Simbans PicassoTab: Best Budget Drawing Tablet

The 10-inch Simbans PicassoTab and the slightly larger Simbans PicassoTab XL are some of my favorite drawing tablets for $300. Before I tell you why, here is a little backstory.

I have been working as a digital artist for the last 6 years and have found these two tablets to be some of the best ones available. The most common question I get from my students and beginners is whether it is possible to get a good tablet at an affordable price.

The answer is yes. However, you need to know what to look for when choosing a good tablet. I normally recommend the Simbans PicassoTab and Simbans PicassoTab XL for most of them. Both of these tablets not only come with an inbuilt screen but also do not need a computer connection to use. They are some of the best budget tablets in the market today.

Although they are very similar, the Simbans Picasso XL is an upgrade and is slightly better than the older 10-inch Simbans Picasso tab.

Simbans PicassoTab Review 10-inch

  • Screen Size: 10.1-inch tablet
  • Resolution: 1280 x 800 pixels
  • Storage: 32 GB, expand to 128 GB
  • Processor: Quad-Core MTK8163 1.3/ 2GHz/Core
  • RAM: 4 GB / 2 GB

How much does Simbans PicassoTab cost?

Standalone tablets are very expensive, and you can rarely get a good one below $300. However, the Simbans PicassoTab is very affordable at slightly under $300 at $219.

The Simbans Picasso XL is also not too expensive and costs around $259. This is mainly because it is slightly larger.

In both options, you will get a free Picasso Pen, screen protector, charger, and leather casing. In many other brands, such as Apple iPad Pro, you will have to buy the pen separately, making it more expensive.

Simbans PicassoTab

Display Color and Quality

The Simbans Picasso Tab has a 10.1-inch screen size, while the XL comes with an 11.6-inch screen. Both are big enough for use as both a drawing and a note-taking tablets.

The screen is bright and shows crisp and clear images thanks to the 16:9 aspect ratio capacitive IPS touch screen and large 1280 by 800 pixels screen resolution for the Picasso Tab 10.1 inch and 1366 x 768 pixels for the Simbans Picasso XL.

This difference is negligible, and you may not notice the difference unless you keenly check it. Although the HD resolution is good for both artists and writers, the resolution is quite low compared to the more expensive and powerful iPad Pro at 2388 x 1668 pixels.

When you buy the tablet, you get a couple of bonus-free items discussed later in this review. One of these things is a preinstalled screen protector that will help protect your tablet from screen cracks and breakage.

Simbans PicassoTab Stylus

Most tablets in this price range will require you to buy a stylus pen separately, with some ranging from up to $100 for an Apple Pen. Among the free bonus items, the Simbans Picasso has a free stylus pen, so you will not have to spend extra just to get the necessary tools you need for drawing or writing.

The pen has up to 1024 pressure levels that will let you draw many different strokes with ease. Unlike some more expensive brands, the Picasso Pen is battery-powered with up to 1000 hours of battery life.

Portability

First of all both Simbans PicassoTab and Simbans Picasso XL have both a screen and computer. You will not need to connect to a computer to use.

This means that it is a fully portable tablet great on the go or when traveling or outdoors. This is great because if you were to go for other brands such as Huion or Wacom, at this price range, you can only get a graphic tablet with a screen that needs to connect to a computer for use.

The tablet is small and easy to carry at ‎10.24 x 6.81 x 0.39 inches in dimension and weighs 2.96 pounds. For a fully portable drawing tablet, however, the battery life is short at 5 hours although it depends on usage.

Speed and Storage

The Simbans Picasso Tab runs on an upgradable Android 9 pie operating system and Android 10 for the 64 GB option. For speed and multitasking, the tablet comes equipped with a Quad Core MTK8163 1.3GHz/Core processor and 2 GB RAM with a 4 GB alternative. The 4GB option is faster with a 2 GHz processing speed.

This RAM and processor speed will easily run most drawing applications without problems. However, if you intend to run very powerful games or animation, the processor might be a bit slow and we recommend a more expensive corei5 or corei7 processor.

You have 2 options for file storage that match the RAM you choose. You have 32 GB upgradable to 128 GB with an external SD card and 64 GB upgradable to 128 GB.

This size is enough for most professionals. However, photographers might need a tablet that is expandable up to 1 or 2 TB due to the large raw file sizes.

Simbans PicassoTab Keyboard

If you intend to use it as a writing tablet or for note taking, we recommend you add the affordable Simbans Keyboard for 10-inch PicassoTab Tablet to your purchase for a faster QWERTY keyboard and mouse feel when taking notes.

Is the Simbans Picasso tab worthwhile?

Yes. The Simbans Picasso is a good, worthwhile purchase for both beginners and professional artists. This is because it offers great features that you can find on very expensive tablets at an unbeatable affordable price point of under 250$.

Additionally, you get 4 free bonus items unlike when you buy most other tablets at this price point. These include the Picasso Pen, Hand Drawing glove, Leather case, screen protector, and Charger.

Generally, most other brands will only offer a graphic tablet at this price range.

Drawing Tablet vs Graphic Tablet vs Pen Computer Tablet: What is the Difference

A standalone drawing tablet has a screen and a computer where you can install the software. It is fully portable and you can use it without needing to connect to a computer. A good example is the Simbans Picasso Tab.

A graphic tablet has a screen but lacks a computer where you can install apps. It depends on a computer to host software but you can still see what you are drawing on the tablet. It is partially portable but must connect to a computer to use.

A drawing tablet or pen tablet lacks both a screen and a computer. It must be used with a computer and is not at all portable. Because of their price and easy usage, they are the most recommended tablets for beginners.
