The Best Laptop Under $500

Although a good laptop is hard to come by at this price range, it is not totally impossible. As long as you know what to look for, then choosing the best one for you will be an easy task.

One thing to note, however, despite the performance on these laptops being relatively ok, the screen display on most of them may not be the best. Getting an industry standard at least close to a MacBook Pro, the screen will be almost impossible and you will have to forgo some aspects for the cheap prices.

Acer Aspire 5 Best Laptop under $500 with long battery life

  • Screen Size: 15.6 inches
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Processor: ‎3.5 GHz ryzen_3_3350u
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Graphics Card: AMD Radeon Vega 6
  • Storage Space: 128 GB SSD
  • Dimensions: 14.31 x 9.86 x 0.71 inches
  • Battery: up to 10 hours

The Acer Aspire 5 is one of the cheapest laptops for video editing with a large screen and the longest battery life in this review. The laptop runs for up to 10 hours, way above the other laptops in this review that range between 5 and 8 hours of battery life.

The screen size comes in at 15.6 inches which is large and comfortable enough for video editing. Additionally, full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution meets the optimal recommended resolution.

Unfortunately, the screen uses an LED technology display which is not the best. As mentioned earlier, IPS screen display technology is more clear and more recommended. A good 3.5 GHz ryzen_3_3350u Processor and AMD Radeon Vega 6 graphics card, help you easily multitask when using this laptop.

Unfortunately, the RAM and storage space is low at 4 GB and 128 GB respectively. The storage space is adjustable, but the RAM will be a challenge to improve.

Pros

  • Large Screen size
  • High Resolution
  • Affordable price
  • Good Processor and GPU
  • Long Battery life

Cons

  • Low RAM and Storage Space
  • LED screen instead of IPS screen

Asus VivoBook 15 The best 15-inch Windows laptop

Asus VivoBook 15 Specs

  • Screen Size: 15.6 inches
  • Resolution: 1920×1080 pixels Full HD screen
  • Processor: 10th Generation Core i3
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Graphics Card: Intel UHD Graphics
  • Storage Space: 128 GB SSD
  • Dimensions: 14.1 x 9.1 x 0.78 inches
  • Weight: 3.75 pounds
  • Battery: up to 6 hours
  • Connectivity:  USB 3.2 Type-C, USB 3.2 Type-A, USB 2.0, and HDMI; Gigabit Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) (USB Transfer speed may vary. Learn more at ASUS website)

Speed and Performance

The Asus Vivobook 15, runs on one of the latest ranges of CPUs available in the market today. It runs on the 10th Generation Core i3 processor and 8 GB RAM. The Dual core processor plus Intel UHD Graphics card will be useful for video editing and fast rendering.

A good processor and RAM plus an Intel UHD Graphics card make the laptop fast and easy to use for multi-tasking. The Graphics card has a base clock of 300 Mhz and a Maximum of 900 Mhz. This makes it faster than many other similarly priced GPUs.

Body and Build

ASUS VivoBook 15 Thin and Light Laptop takes the spot for the Best Laptops for Video Editing under $500. The body and build of this laptop greatly borrow from Asus’ premium ZENbook laptops, only cheaper.

First of all, you will have more than 3 different color alternatives to choose from if you go for this laptop. You can either choose Slate Grey color, Transparent Silver, or Peacock Blue.

We liked these 3 color options and leaned more toward the sleek Transparent Silver as the best look. The colors appear on top but the back is a polycarbonate material dark black area.

The silver and slate gray color contrast with the black keyboard and white lettering, for a nice cool look. The keyboard is also backlit for a cool look, especially in low-light conditions. What’s great is that the backlit is adjustable and you can even turn it totally off to save battery life.

Keys are spaced out like in a Macbook pro keyboard for a comfortable typing user experience. Unlike the back, the mouse and keyboard area is smooth and feels nice to feel and touch when using.

To add to the ergonomic keyboard design, the slight angular tilt on the keyboard makes it comfortable to use as you type. The tilt is also important as a cooling system for the laptop with cold air flowing underneath. The space also allows a good sound experience.

When it comes to durability, the laptop’s body is made of strong polymer with a matte color body and shiny aluminum coated logo finish, which makes it feel and look like a more expensive premium laptop for almost half the price.

The laptop only weighs 3.75 pounds and is relatively small at 14.1 x 9.1 x 0.78 inches. This ensures easy portability. Unfortunately, the 6-hour battery life may be a little short especially if you like working outside the office.

Screen and Display

The screen is perfect for video editing with a 15.6-inch size. Additionally, it is Full HD with 1080p resolution. The Matte finish screen also reduces the amount of light emitted and protects your eyes. Additionally, the screen is free from angle light reflection because the screen will not show reflections in the room.

Despite this, the overall verdict on the screen is not the best because of a number of factors.

Although the screen is great for indoor use, using it outside is a challenge because it only displays 230 nits of brightness. Furthermore, the low-light matte screen makes the colors appear less vivid and colorful even with great resolution.

The LCD display screen technology is older than the current IPS technology. This is evident especially when most graphics appear unclear when you view the screen at an angle.

ASUS did a great job on the specs and pricing of this laptop, they compromised on some important aspects that could have made this the perfect laptop.

Pros

  • Affordable Laptop
  • Great Processing power and RAM
  • Adjustable Backlit Keyboard
  • Multiple Color Screen
  • Ergonomic Keyboard
  • Full HD High-Resolution Screen
  • Large 15.6-inch screen size
  • Lightweight and small size for easy portability
  • Great Audio Quality
  • Good 720p webcam

Cons

  • Not the best for outdoor use due to low light output
  • Uses old LCD screen technology that is not best for color display
  • Matte screen affects resolution and color clarity

HP 14″ Home and Business Laptop  Best laptop for photo editing under $500

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B09HVC79PC&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=jcdnew 20&language=en USir?t=jcdnew 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=B09HVC79PC
  • Screen Size: 14 inches
  • Resolution: 1366×768 pixels
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 3 3200U
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Graphics Card: AMD Radeon Vega 3
  • Storage Space: 128 GB SSD
  • Dimensions: 12.75 x 8.89 x 0.78 inches
  • Battery: up to 6 hours

The HP 14 is sturdy and very well built for its price range. It has a full plastic build and weighs 3.22 lbs only. Additionally the small 12.75 x 8.89 x 0.78 inches makes it easily portable. Just like the Asus Vivobook, 6 hours battery life is a little low and not a full day’s use.

The biggest shortcoming of the previous laptop was the screen and display. Let’s see if the HP 14 solves this. The screen is large enough for video editing at 14 inches in size, slightly smaller than the Asus. Unlike the Asus Vivo 15, the screen uses modern IPS technology which is better compared to LCD.

This laptop’s screen is not an anti-glare screen and is a little brighter compared to ASUS. It has a 250 nits brightness display, slightly higher than Asus. This is still not good for outdoor use.

The resolution is decent, although slightly lower compared to the Asus at 1366×768 pixels. This is crisp and clear. Unfortunately, the color display is not so vivid with -34% Adobe RGB, 45% NTSC rating, and -55% sRGB. This is very low color accuracy especially compared to the standard MacBook Pro which has 97% sRGB and 91% Adobe RGB. However, for its cheap price range, the screen is ok.

Laptops vs Desktops for video editing

You can use either a Laptop or Desktop for video editing. However, you have to make sure you buy laptops with specific specs, that can run editing software smoothly. The best thing about PCs is that most specifications are easily upgradable.

You can buy a cheap desktop that can not do video editing, maybe with 1 GB RAM, but slowly buy RAM, Storage space, or even a GPU separate. Laptops on the other hand are more rigid and you can rarely upgrade specs. Make sure you choose laptops with specs good enough for smooth video editing.

How to shop for a cheap laptop for video editing?

Your budget is a key factor to consider when choosing a laptop for any requirement. When choosing a cheap laptop, you need to consider all the factors mentioned above. For the display, anywhere from 14 inches is the minimum requirement while for optimal great user experience 15 inches and above size is recommended.

8K and 4K screen resolutions are great but not a must-have for a video editing laptop. A full HD display of 1920 x1080 pixels is the optimal requirement while any HD display is the minimum. For the screen type, Backlit LED screen technology is the minimum required but IPS screen technology display is the best.

Intel core i3 processor and 4 GB RAM are the minimum requirements for the speed, while for Optimum performance, Core i5 or Core i7 processors are recommended with 16 GB RAM and above.

As you choose a cheap laptop, at least have a dedicated graphics card installed on purchase. This greatly speeds up your device.

For the storage space, we recommend a minimum of 512 GB and 1 TB and above for optimal performance. SSD models are more recommended compared to traditional noisy HDD drives.

Choose a cheap Chromebook vs a cheap Windows laptop

For photo and video editing, or any other professional use, we recommend Windows laptops over Chromebooks. Windows Laptops are able to hold many heavy editing programs compared to Chromebooks.

To make up for this, Chromebooks are cheaper and have longer battery life. However, if they are unable to hold most video editing software, they are less preferred for video editing.
