Charging either Apple Pencil 2 or 1 is not complicated. In this article, I will show you 2 ways How to charge Apple Pencils. We will cover both 1st and 2nd generation versions.
How to charge Apple Pencil 1
The first-generation Apple Pencil does not have a magnet and can not be charged by simply placing it on your iPad side. There are a couple of ways you can do it for the first-generation version. Here is how you can charge your first-generation Apple Pencil.
Remove the cap from the Pencil and plug the pencil into your iPad. To confirm whether it is charging just go to settings and go to Apple Pencil. It will show the amount of available charge and whether it is charging or not.
The second way you can charge it is by connecting to a lightning cable using a USB C adapter that comes with your pencil. The main disadvantage of using this method is you will not know how far your pencil has charged or if it is even charging.
The third way is using a USB A adapter. Just plug your USB adapter into a power source and plug your Apple Pencil 1 on the other end.
The other way is you use a docking station like below with a USB A end.
You just poke in your pen on the device. You also have a small hole on the side to place your Apple Pencil Cap.
How to charge Apple Pencil 2
- Turn your iPad to the side
- Place your Pen on your iPad side
Charging Apple Pencil 2 using your iPad
The first way is to just place your Apple Pencil 2 on the top section of your Apple iPad. You will notice there is a magnet on it that will automatically attract your Apple Pencil 2. The correct side to place the pen is indicated by a difference in shading from the other areas of the body.
If you do not feel the magnet attract the pen, it is turned to the wrong side. Just turn it around until you feel the pull and your pen will attach to the pad.
On the screen, you will be able to see how much charge is available on your phone at the top right corner.
Using a power adapter
The second way to charge your iPad is by using a power adapter. For this method, you will have to buy the power adapter separately. To charge it, remove the cap on the Apple Pencil and plug it into the USB-C to the Apple Pencil Adapter. After that connect the other end to your tablet using a USB C cable that came with your iPad.
