In this article, I will show you how to change background color in Illustrator. First of all, you need to be clear about which background you intend to change.
For example, you may want to change the background of an artwork. Alternatively, you may want to change the illustrator user interface or artboard background.
This article will cover all these for you. Let’s start with the most important, changing the background color for artwork.
How to change background for an Artwork in Illustrator
We will use this Artwork that I did for one of my clients. The background currently seems to be white but it is the default illustrator artboard color.
Step 1: Go to Window>Layers to go to the Layers Panel. Click on the Plus sign to create a new layer.
Step 2: Double-click on the new layer created and name it Background. Drag it down to rearrange it to be at the bottom.
Step 3: With the background layer selected, click on the shape tool or shortcut M. Click and drag to draw a rectangle shape covering the artboard.
Step 4: The new shape is your background. It is set as the default foreground color or has no color if no foreground color was set. To change that, select your shape and go to Window>Color to bring up the color panel. Drag the sliders to change colors or click on the circled area.
If you want to add a gradient color, just go to Window>Gradient to bring up the gradient panel. Choose the type of gradient you want. You can double-click on the sliders to change colors.

The default white artboard color does not exist and will not be printed. It is simply a placeholder. To change it go to View > Show Transparency Grid. The whole page appears transparent.
Go to File>Document Set up choose the color you want and click Ok. After that choose to Simulate colored paper and that is it.
Changing the artboard background color follows the same process as the artwork. Just draw a rectangle the size of the artboard.
How to Change Adobe Illustrator Interface Background Color
Adobe Illustrator comes with a default dark gray background. If you do not like it, you can change it by going to Edit>User interface and choosing the one you like best. Click Ok when done.
